Crucial Rule: The 4 'Reliably' Conditions for PIP Descriptors

When DWP assessors evaluate your PIP claim, being physically able to do an activity once is not enough to score 0 points. Under Regulation 4(2A) of the Social Security (Personal Independence Payment) Regulations 2013, you are only considered able to carry out an activity if you can do so:

01. SAFELY
In a Manner Unlikely to Cause Harm
Without substantial risk of injury, fall, burning, exhaustion, or distress to yourself or others.
02. TO AN ACCEPTABLE STANDARD
Properly Completed
E.g., washing thoroughly enough to be clean, or dressing in clean, weather-appropriate clothes without significant disarray.
03. REPEATEDLY
As Often as Reasonably Required
If preparing a meal leaves you so exhausted or in pain that you cannot do it again later the same day, you cannot do it reliably.
04. IN A REASONABLE TIME
No More Than Twice as Long
Taking more than twice the time a person without your health condition would take means you cannot complete the task.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many points do you need for PIP?

You need at least 8 points in a component. Daily Living (activities 1–10) and Mobility (activities 11–12) are scored separately: 8 to 11 points meets the standard rate threshold and 12 or more meets the enhanced rate threshold. Points from one component never carry over to the other, so 6 Daily Living points plus 6 Mobility points is below the threshold for both. Within each activity only the single highest-scoring descriptor that applies counts.

How much will I get on PIP?

It depends on which components and rates you reach. For 2026/2027, Daily Living pays £76.70 a week (standard) or £114.60 (enhanced), and Mobility pays £30.30 (standard) or £80.00 (enhanced). The smallest award is standard Mobility alone at £30.30 a week; enhanced in both components is the maximum £194.60 a week, paid as £778.40 every 4 weeks. Is PIP means-tested or taxed?

No. PIP is completely tax-free and not means-tested. Income and savings do not determine your award. Other circumstances, including stays in hospital or a care home, can affect payment.

What happens if my condition varies from day to day?

The DWP considers the majority of days over the required period. Where more than one descriptor applies, or different scoring descriptors together cover most days, special selection rules apply. Read the linked assessment guide; this checklist does not assess fluctuating conditions for you.

Can qualifying for PIP unlock other benefits?

An award may help you access other support, subject to each scheme’s rules. For example, enhanced mobility may support access to Motability. Carer’s benefits, parking permits and local discounts have separate eligibility requirements.
